Complex Event Processing

The challenge in RFID technology is to derive meaningful information that delivers real business value from huge amounts of raw data.

In order to deploy a successful RFID solution, it is not sufficient to merely install readers and tag items. The readers may generate huge amounts of events both useful and spurious. This data needs to be filtered, turned into meaningful information and integrated with other systems to make businesses efficient.

What is a simple event?
A simple event is a scan made by RFID reader on RFID tag.

What is CEP?
Complex Event Processing identifies and translates raw event data to meaningful information that can be acted upon in real-time. It is a way to derive business intelligence for making businesses efficient. CEP enables understanding, identification and translation of low level event patterns in IT layers of our enterprises to meaningful information that will impact high level business goals, policies and processes in real-time. CEP employs techniques such as detection of complex patterns of many events, event correlation and abstraction, event hierarchies, and relationships between events such as causality, membership, timing, and event-driven processes.

CEP gathers many simple events, applies sets of event processing rules in real time, and determines which complex event needs to be acted upon. The action may be alert generation based on the business rules that define events. The alerts are generated when certain events happen or when certain events do not happen based on the business rule definitions.

It is used, for example, in services such as tracing counterfeiting of drugs, tracking perishable items, detecting thefts, delayed shipment, demand forecasting.
